Chanel 4 – “The Fake Trade Documentry” A must see for all designer brand lovers!

Last night (3/03/2008), Chanel 4 Uk showed a very interesting and formative documentary on the insights and growth of the Fake trade, now a billion dollar industry. It showed that the fake trade had moved way past brand name designer bags and clothes; into food, sports equipment, medical drugs and food! Yes food! I watched in amazement as a fake egg was made by chemist, one of the ingredients caused alziemers the reporter said!

As I am selling vintage designer handbags; I was most intrigued by the fake clothes and bags reports.
The documentary revealed that growth in the fake industry was the back lash of famous brand name merchants outsourcing their manufacturing to the far east, so as to reduce production cost while increasing their profit margins! Where labour cost was as little as $15 US dollars a week!

It makes me laugh when I read some so called experts out there write or say “real Chanel or Gucci or what ever the brand is; are not made in China or some far east country” It shows they don’t have a clue. When I previously sold bags on eBay I have added many Authentic bags removed by Ebay Vero programme claiming that I had broken their rules. Only once did re-enstate my listing saying that they had made an error. This just revealed to me that didn’t have a clue and honest sellers are just at their mercy, which is such a shame.

These companies are in business to make money and will do what ever is necessary to increase there profit margin. Items are made using cheap labour in far east countries; made in Italy, France or Paris etc are just tags/labels that have been added by a piece worker.
I have always suspected that the same materials that were being used to make the real thing were being used to make the so called fakes.
So now maybe we have to re-evaluate what we deem to be fake to just “not made by original brand owner”?

It showed that corruption was way at the top; as one guy who was hired as a detective to help identify fake factories, by a famous brand name company revealed how a secretary (someone in managerial position) of a high class brand name company operating in china had used the manufacturer’s original blue print to start his own counterfeit factory; and we wonder why these fakes are so hard to tell apart from the real thing!
This worker when confronted felt like he was doing nothing wrong, he was just helping to fuel the economy after all the fake industry was contributing to 5% of the economy.
The documentary also showed that some top brand companies had given up and just accepted that the fake trade was an inevitable back lash for outsourcing to these far east countries.

One custom officer who was interviewed stated that the demand was the problem; that if they close one factory then buyers would just find some else to buy from, thus a new fake factory is born.

It showed that even the rich had now problems buying these bags, one lady while having her botox treatment stated that if she added her name to the waiting list for a particular Louis Vuitton (LV) style, by the time she got it would have been out of fashion so therefore she was happy to go to Dubai where she hand friends attended a bag party to buy from “Billy the bag” (quote); who quote “sells the best fake in the world” (end of quote)!
The customer officer also stated the task of stamping out the fake trade was made even harder as some Brand producer refuse to come forward to say if certain items where fake or not! Makes you wonder doesn’t it!
Maybe some of these brand owners have their own “fake factories” so as to muscle in on the action and scrape back some of their lost profits! mmmmmmmmm

The purpose of this article is to inform and educate; I leave you to draw your own conclusions and assumptions. The documentary was tailored to insinuate that all this money was going towards guns and crimes so as make the consumer fearful. While I do not endorse the fake trade, I do believe people who are poor, hungry and live in very bad conditions will do any thing to help their family survive.

The documentary showed people traveling from far and wide coming to the city to seek factory jobs, if they didn’t make the cut for the real factory because they were too young or had no experience they were then sent to the fake factories to work under terrible conditions and very long hours by the same agents.
