EastEnders drew in almost half of British TV viewers last night when Peggy Mitchell died.
The BBC soap attracted a peak of 8 million – a 41% share of the national audience – as the Queen Vic legend took her final breath last night.
In the emotional scenes, the Walford icon, played by Barbara Windsor, was seen chatting to a vision of her old friend Pat Butcher [ Pam St Clement ] after taking an overdose.
She decided to take the pills after finding out her cancer diagnosis had become terminal.

Peggy had promised sons Phil [ Steve McFadden ] and Grant [Ross Kemp] that she wouldn’t commit suicide after revealing she was desperate to die on her own terms rather than let the disease kill her.
But she went ahead and did it anyway after being left home alone in the Mitchell house.
Tonight is set to be another tear-jerker as Phil returns home and makes the heartbreaking discovery that his mother is dead .

The Mitchell hardman breaks down the morning after he thought he’d stopped her from making the decision.
In a clip released by the BBC ahead of this evening’s show, he says: “Mum? Mum, you awake?”
But after opening the door and turning the light on, he falls to pieces at the sight of Peggy’s body in an emotionally powerful scene.
