Every three years or so, Comme Des Garçons and its retail platform, Dover Street Market, take stock of the sheer number of clothes, shoes, leather goods, and other accessories they’ve accrued over the past seasons, and then put it all on super sale in true CDG fashion: eye-grabbing installations, artfully merchandised racks, and a space that reflects the beautifully eclectic, avant-garde appeal of Rei Kawakubo’s rich universe. Tomorrow, CDG and DSM’s Super-Market-Market opens its doors to the public in New York City’s Clarkson Square.
The last time the event happened, lines stretched for blocks and even celebrities like Pharrell (who has a collaborative unisex scent with CDG, Girl), had to get in on the action. Highsnobiety co-founder Jeff Carvalho was there, and according to him, the style icon and multi-hyphenate artist shopped the sale with a VIP entourage.
We were lucky enough to get an early look at this year’s sale before the inevitable madness begins. It’s absolutely worth it to pop by. In addition to installations featuring everything from Undercover Gilapples to stacked shopping carts full of Pharrell’s Girl fragrance, gigantic golden babies, and huge ice cream cones. The space is divided between menswear and womenswear in two different rooms, and shoppers are given madras plaid shopping bags to pile stuff in—sort of like a super-stylish version of Nickelodeon’s Toy Run from the ’90s.
As far as products, you can expect plenty of CDG in-house labels like Gosha Rubchinskiy, Junya Watanabe, Ganryu, CDG BLACK, and we even spotted a few of CDG Shirt’s collaborations with Supreme—namely the Harold Hunter baseball shirt and a few pinstripe/polka dot button-downs. Grail-hunters won’t have to look hard for items like Visvim Virgil Boots or Raf Simons x Sterling Ruby jeans, and Jun Takahashi’s UNDERCOVER label has a few gems sprinkled in the mix. Should you get tired while shopping or go broke fast (whichever happens first), Rose Bakery will be on hand to serve coffee and its trademark pastries to customers in need of sustenance.
Items are priced to move, and you can consult the Baron Von Fancy-designed signage in case you have any questions. While you have to do the math yourself, all CDG brands are 70% off, and all non-CDG brands are 80% off. So yeah—you’re gonna want to bring a credit card.
