Coinciding with the 2016 Champions League Final, and the launch of Nike Football’s new Mercurial boot, we met up with a couple of Nike Football’s top designers at the Nike Science of Speed hub installation in Milan.
To see what Max Blau and Jeonwoo Lee are rocking, check the gallery below. We also quizzed these Nike Football top dogs on a few recent football-related releases.

Explain why you decided to create a “What The” Mercurial.
Max: I’m a big fan of the “What The” Dunk, I still have my pair in the box, I’m saving them. Actually, we connected the dots, and said “why not?” The design team loved the idea, because we’re still talking about a performance boot, so we had to find that balance between innovation and style. The design team pulled it off, I think it came off really well.
Jeonwoo: We wanted to celebrate the history of the Mercurial. From the moment we launched the first Mercurial back in 1998, there have been so many iconic colorways worn by top athletes. This one basically shows to the world that there is a rich history behind this silhouette, and we want to celebrate it. At the end of the day, the products are the most important things, so we enjoy showcasing the past and present in one boot.
Do you have any favourites from the recent NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing release?
Max: I like the Tiempo, I like it off-pitch and on-pitch. The craftsmanship and the leather used for that product is quite good. I think the collaboration is great in the sense that it pushes the boundaries. You take football in this case, and we push it to a place that most consumers won’t expect. I think the product is extremely interesting.
Jeonwoo: Both the Mercurial and the Magista are super interesting. They capture the essence of the boots with a unique twist.
